He is pre-deceased by his wife of 57 years, Ethel Brogden Cruise and infant son, James Glenn Cruise. He is survived by his five daughters, Joann Bradsher, (Buddy) of Roxboro, NC; Glenda Cruise of Durham, NC; Melba Thompson (Randall) of Roxboro, NC; Lila Dianne Cruise of Winston Salem, NC; and Betsy Hamilton (Todd) of Iron Station, NC. He has fourteen grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews in Blacksburg, Galax and Hillsville, VA. Born in Mount Airy, NC on May 30, 1924 to the late John and Lucy Cruise, Glenn grew up on a farm in Hillsville, VA, with his eight siblings. His mother took care of the family while his father served as pastor to several small Primitive Baptist churches in the area. Glenn attended school there and served in the Army during World War II from May 1943 – November 1945. It was during the war that Glenn met the love of his life, Ethel Brogden. During his years in the Army, he served with Percy Clements, who was related to Ethel. Percy encouraged him to write a letter of introduction, which he did. They continued to write during the war, dated after his discharge and married in 1946. He has missed her terribly since her death in December 2003 at the age of 76. Glenn was dedicated to his immediate and extended families and his friends. His willingness to help others was the fabric of his life. In honor of his love, strength and character to family and community, he was recognized as a Father of the Year in June 1978, an annual special recognition sponsored by the Durham Herald newspaper. Glenn was an extraordinary mechanic. He was highly respected for his work and received many referrals from those who knew him. At Grey Stone Church in Durham he and Ethel especially enjoyed tending the rose garden and he maintained and serviced the church vans and the cars of many of his friends, frequently at reduced charges for those in need. Glenn was also dedicated to helping maintain and service lots of different farm equipment, especially tractors on the family farm in Creedmoor owned by Ethel’s parents and where she grew up. To honor his memory and to celebrate his life, the family will receive family and friends at Eakes Funeral Home, 834 North Main Street, Creedmoor, NC 27522, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., on Thursday, December 29th. A celebration service officiated by Reverend Andrea Woodhouse will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, December 30th in the chapel at Eakes Funeral Home with interment following at the family cemetery, 15260 Brogden Road, Creedmoor, NC 27522. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Community Home Care and Hospice, 7714 Chapel Hill Road, Raleigh, NC., 27607. Leave a Tribute Posted by Glenda Cruise on December 31, 2016 Dearest Friends and Family, We are deeply grateful for your sweet messages about mom and dad. There is so much peace and thanksgiving in our hearts for the life they lived and their caring ways of helping to make life meaningful and fulfilling for us girls and for the friends and family that surrounded them each day. Certainly their Grey Stone family's love and commitment to a life of faith in God and sharing with others was paramount and life changing to mom and dad! The gratitude we feel for all of you who loved them, worked with them and helped them grow in their faith and ability to love and forgive in this life--as we all know challenges abound--is immeasurable. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and may God continue to bless us all. Share Posted by Bayard Crumpton on December 29, 2016 Dear Cruise girls & family. What a "Southern Gentleman" your Daddy was. I spent time with Mr. Cruise May 9, 2007 when we traveled to DC to see the WWII Memorial. He mostly talked about "Ethel & the girls". What a proud man he was! I am honored to have know him. Share Posted by Emma Smart on December 28, 2016 Dear Glenda, Melba and family, what a very special couple your parent were. I remember them fondly from working in the rose garden at Grey Stone. Mrs. Ethel and Mr. Glenn were strong witnesses to many . Please know we are sad at your loss, but rejoice that your Dad has reached his Heavenly reward. May God bless you all. Fondly, Emma and Bob Smart Share Posted by Brenda Brogden on December 27, 2016 Joanne, Glenda, Melba, Diane, and Betsy: I am so sorry to hear about Glenn. Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal. Blessing to you and your family from Cambridge we enjoyed caring for him while he was here and hated to see him leave. God bless you all. You are forever in our thoughts and prayers. Share Posted by Malbert Smith on December 27, 2016 I had the pleasure of knowing the Cruise family through Grey Stone over the years. Glenn and Ethel were dear friends of my parents and were two of the most dedicated and faithful members of our church. Glenn was truly a servant and saint. He and Ethel made a difference to so many people.
